Planets & Me

Privacy notice — the waitlist

This notice covers one thing: the waitlist form on this page. It is not terms of service for a product, because there is no product open yet. When Planets & Me opens, it will have its own terms and its own, longer privacy notice, and you will be able to read them before you give it anything.

What we collect

Your email address, and nothing else. There is no field on this site for your name, your date of birth, your time of birth or your place of birth, and we do not want them at this stage. If you send any of those to us by other means we will not add them to the waitlist.

We run no analytics on this site. There is no tracking script, no pixel, no cookie set by us, and no third-party font or embedded player. The sample reports are read from files served from this site. The introduction video, if one is present, loads only when you click it. We therefore cannot tell how many people visited, which pages they read, or whether you reached this sentence.

One script on this page is not ours. Netlify adds a dashboard widget to the HTML of the sites it hosts, after we upload the page and without our involvement. We measured what it does on the deployed site: it is served from this address, it makes no request anywhere else, and it sets no cookie. This site's content-security policy separately refuses it permission to run inline code or styles, so it displays nothing at all. If there is a setting that removes it we have not found one. We mention it because a claim about what scripts a page carries is worth very little if it quietly means the ones we chose.

The chart application is a separate thing

The chart at https://app.planetsandme.com does need your date, time and place of birth — it cannot compute anything without them — and it is a different system from this waitlist. The two are not connected: this form does not know what you computed, and the application does not know whether you joined the list.

Birth date, time and place together identify a person nearly uniquely, so that application has its own terms, which set out what it keeps, what erasing your account removes, and the one thing it cannot remove. They are readable without signing in, and you agree to them before a chart is computed. What follows on this page is about the waitlist only.

Who holds it, and where

Your email address is stored in our own database in Mumbai — Amazon's ap-south-1 region, in an account we control. It does not go to a mailing-list company, and it does not leave India.

Nothing legally compels that today. India's DPDP Act permits transfers except to countries the government restricts, and it has restricted none. We chose it because it is a simpler thing to be able to tell you, and because if that ever changes we will not be moving your data under a deadline.

The page itself is served by Netlify, who are therefore a separate company from the one storing the address — the page and the list are not the same system. Netlify's server logs record the request your browser made, including its IP address, in the ordinary way any web host does.

We keep one thing about you beyond the address, and it is not reversible. When you sign up we store a salted hash of your IP address, used to stop one machine submitting the form hundreds of times. It is not an IP address and cannot be turned back into one, it is never used to work out where you are or to recognise you later, and it deletes itself after two days.

What we use it for

One thing: writing to you when Planets & Me opens, and about the launch itself. Not a newsletter, not marketing from anyone else, and never sold, rented or shared. Every email we send will have a one-click unsubscribe.

How long we keep it, and how to get it removed

Until the launch mail has gone out and you have either joined or unsubscribed, after which we delete the address. You can ask for it to be removed at any point before that, for any reason or none, and you do not have to explain. Write to privacy@planetsandme.com from the address you signed up with, or from another one telling us which to remove, and we will delete it and confirm that we have. There is nothing else of yours for us to delete, because the address is all we took.

Changes

If this notice changes before launch, the changed version replaces this page. We will not start collecting something new under this notice without saying so on the form itself.
